So you decided to get a laser hair removal service for your underarms, legs, arms, or upper lip. Now, follow the guidelines below to ensure your skin is cared for properly over the next few days.
Note: Redness and mild swelling are common and perfectly normal temporary reactions after laser hair removal. Other reactions including irritation, itching, and a mild burning sensation (similar to sunburn) may occur as well. These should subside over the next 24-72 hours. If you experience persistent redness or irritation, or if you have any questions, contact your laser hair removal salon or your dermatologist.
1. Keep the treated area clean, and avoid heat and friction for 1-2 days. This means:
- Do not wax or pluck the hair; you may only shave the hair.
- Use sunscreen and avoid sun exposure.
- No tanning, sunbathing, sunbeds, or fake tanning.
- Avoid scratching or touching the area with unwashed hands.
- Do not apply deodorant, scented body sprays, or lotions to the area other than those recommended by your therapist for at least 24 hours.
- Be gentle on your skin and avoid any exfoliants and peels for at least one week.
- To soothe and protect the skin, apply AI cream to the area twice a day for three days following your treatment.
- Always wash your hands before applying any products.

2. Hair or stubble will appear to grow right after the treatment. This is not hair regrowth, but rather your dead hair being pushed out of the hair follicle. Anytime between two (2) to six (6) weeks later, the hair will shed. You can speed up this process by moisturizing and gently exfoliating the skin.
3. Do not wax or pluck any hair that does not fall out. Shave the area and inform your therapist about it on your next visit.
4. Treatment is repeated at four (4) to eight (8) week intervals, depending on the hair characteristics and treatment area. New growth will vary based on the area (growth cycles) and on the individual patient (gender, hormonal problems, etc). You may discuss this with your therapist.
